Hi, I am Caitie. I'm a little curmudgeonly and uncouth, but when my husband repeats the jokes I say under my breath everyone thinks he's funny. I'm trying to get over my Bachelor of Arts and write again. (I'm not a recent grad.) I have a toddler (please, send gin). I do my best to wander after Jesus, and, thankfully, He dances with my doubts very well. I'm an angsty soul with a healthy appetite for puns and lists and organizing all the things. I ran Hope Gathering (a women's conference in NYC) and make dinner happen most nights.

#Kony2012

#Kony2012 Really a GREAT job by Invisible Children in reminding us that the LRA is still out there, re-igniting the discussion and raising awareness and that cutting foreign aid hurts real people. Our response is an incredible show of brotherhood... Continue Reading →

Angsty Rantings

Stop acting out of fear. We should be the first to humble ourselves, admit we don't have the answers and that we don't fully understand the problem. We must be the first to love people as ourselves and lay down... Continue Reading →

Rediscovery Whimsy

This is perhaps one of my favorite all time Q Talks. Talk about knowing who our God is and knowing how to roll His way to redeem this world.

Group Sex with Teen Girls

This is disgusting.

Out of our fear and insecurity to adequately love our children and teach them the truth about sex and sexuality. So go ahead, be afraid to not be completely honest with your kids and let them learn about the nature of sex from someone else.

Did God Make the Church Masculine?

Piper is making some noise with this and I'm not sure what I think. The references he makes about the Church being "masculine" is true, but what about under the new covenant? Jesus was, after all, one of the very first feminists.

I'd love to know more about what piper means by "masculine." If he means "man-led" or is he using it to say the church should feel "stereotypically masculine?"

A New Definition of Rape

This is revolutionary in its implications for the lives of so many women. What is Rape/ Abuse vs. Sex and Foreplay is a very tricky line, especially because I think we hardly understand what sex is and who we are as fully human (without ignoring parts of yourself, i.e. your spirit or your mind or your body).

For so many women this changes the entire game; what was once remembered as a night she'd rather forget, is now a night that cries out for justice.

It is very very important, however, to remember that not all those who cry our for justice, are justified in their cries.

The Jews on Sexual Desire, Gender Relations and the Talmud

As the rest of the world struggles to understand gender roles (with the Church hardly awake to that discussion), the Jewish people have been wrestling with it for ages but in an entirely different way. Their tangible understanding of the sacredness and power of the physical body and the integration of body-spirit-mind is challenging to the secular--and also the Christian--world. They may be trying too hard to separate the men and the women, but I wonder if we don't try nearly hard enough. We want to much to be "equal" and don't want to  "oppress" to the extent that we often disregard all social safeguards. No wonder abuse is rampant in our communities.
This is an open letter from one non-Orthodox Rabbi to an Orthodox Rabbi is intriguing, challenging and a glimpse into a world still run by strict social rules. It's hard for me not to wonder--if this a murky glimpse of how my God once instructed His own to behave** (because it was what was best for them), how far off base am I now in my own thoughts of gender roles and relationships?
And anyway, I'd would argue that it is a mutual responsibility to honor and protect the female body and the male sexuality. The daily interactions of that, alas, I can't even begin to suggest.

**I know that the Talmud was compiled/written after Jesus, but I think it is safe to assume that its under girdings were somewhere in Jewish tradition.

Porn, Masturbation and the Church

This is an old CNN Belief Blog post about a couple of pastors in Atlanta that are working to address the sexual addictions of their congregants. Healing the soul to help control the hormones. I like that they address sexuality as something that isn't just a problem to be controlled and feelings to be suppressed. They address sexuality in all its complexity.
